Hou Wanxia - Professional Profile

Hou Wanxia is an Associate Professor of English specialised in teacher training. She has recently been appointed the Dean of the Teaching Development Centre recently established in Simao Teacher's College. She is also qualified as a phonetics coach and examiner in Yunnan Province. Her extensive middle school teaching experience and years of training pre- and in-service teachers in the use of student-centred methods make her a key figure in Simao Prefecture's educational reform.

Hou Wanxia has taught  a number of other subjects to English majors, including English grammar, reading, listening, secretarial skills, culture and translation. She has a wide range of translation and interpreting experience. Previous translation work includes formal and informal letters and documents, speeches and presentations, manuals and publicity materials, teaching and training resources as well as academic articles.

Hou Wanxia says: "I say what I can do and I do what I have promised. I am willing to learn new things and try my best in life and work, without regrets."

A Long-Term Partnership

Outside our Teaching Development Centre
Hou Wanxia and I worked together in China from 2005 to 2010, developing a number of projects to contribute to sustainable development in education in Simao College and rural middle schools. As well as co-teaching undergraduates we delivered in-service teacher training courses, professional development workshops and conference presentations. We also travelled together to rural middle schools, training and supporting teachers and leaders. We have produced an extensive range of documents, training materials and resources in both Chinese and English, our language and creative skills complementing each other. This has provided the foundation for our effective and efficient teamwork. Since my return to Scotland we have been collaborating on translation work, coordinating a team of highly-experienced linguists and proof-readers.
